Grandad is put off the road

-

A Paisley grandad who had more than one for the road at his bowling club has been fined and banned from driving.

William McMahon, 71, was pulled over by the cops in the town’s Canal Street on October 15 at the wheel of his Fiat Panda after complaints of a motorist driving under the influence.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard McMahon, of Chapelhill Road, was more than twice the limit when stopped by officers.

The accused pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while having 49 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath when the legal limit is 22 microgrammes.

Defence agent David Nicolson said the accused had been at an event at his local bowling club the night before and had left his car, when he went back the following day and bumped into a pal where he enjoyed a “couple of shandies.”

He said: “His is a 71-yearold man who cares for his 10- year- old grandaughter and he has looked after her for a significant period of time.

“He had been at a function at his bowling club and quite correctly left his motor car there.

“He returned the following day to pick up his car, met a friend and had a couple of shandies. He believed he was fit to drive.”

Sheriff Ian Anderson fined the accused £400 and banned him for 12 months.
