Invitation to join inter-faith plea for peace
An interfaith service on the theme of peace will be held at Barshaw Park on Remembrance Sunday.
Renfrewshire Interfaith Group and East Renfrewshire Faith Forum have joined with Friends of Barshaw Park and the local CND group to hold the event in the Peace Garden.
This will be the first time that such an event has been held there, and is part of Scottish Interfaith Week, which will run from Sunday, November 12, to Sunday, November 19.
One of the organisers, Douglas Yates, of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in Glenburn, said:“It’s more important than ever to do this especially because of the turmoil the world is in.”
He added:“Those gathered will walk in line to the Peace Garden, each carrying a candle or lantern, and candles will be provided for the first 60 attending.
“Short talks will be given by representatives of various faith traditions.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been active over the past couple of years in keeping the Peace Garden weeded and tidy.
“It’s something we’ve been trying by doing volunteer work in the Peace Garden,” said Mr Yates.
“We’ve been helping the Friends of Barshaw Park to maintain it and make it a nicer place at least twice a year.
“It’s supposed to be maintained by the council but they don’t have the resources to do it.”
The church is well known for its community activism, and carries out clean-ups in Paisley on a regular basis.
Those wishing to attend the event on Sunday, November 12, are asked to meet in the car park at the Rowantree café in Barshaw Park at 4.15pm. After the talk, the gathering will retire to the café for some light refreshments.
