Reece will mix it up at the Albert Hall

Young DJ to play a set at MusicYouth Proms

A teenage DJ from Paisley is set to play before a crowd of 5,000 people at Britain’s most famous music hall.

Fi f t e e n - y e a r- old Reece Robertson, from Hunterhill, will perform a 20- minute solo set, backed by a 60-piece orchestra, at the Royal Albert Hall, in London, later this month.

The amazing opportunity came about after the St Andrew’s Academy pupil got involved with DJ-ing as a music volunteer at the YMCA in Paisley.

He said: “Volunteering involves going along to events and getting the YMCA brand out there.

“I play at The Big Music Project – I’m a champion for that.

“I’ve been DJ-ing properly for just about three years.”

Reece got involved in the now high-tech version of spinning discs through his brother.

“I got my first set of turntables and I just started from that,” he said.

“I play everything – mostly charts stuff, dance, that type of music.”

And you have to be very focussed to be a good DJ.

“It involves a lot of motivation, a lot of travelling and a lot of good contacts,” he added.

Reece uses both vinyl and digital recordings to create his own unique sounds, and now a huge audience will be able to hear just what he can do at the UK Music Youth Proms, to be held at the Royal Albert Hall, where his final song will be A Space Oddity, by David Bowie.

And his trip to London has come about through The Big Music Project and the Paisley YMCA, courtesy of the Paisley UK City of Culture Bid 2021 Fund.

“I’ll be playing before an orchestra,” said Reece.

“And it’s going to involve four or five thousand people at the Royal Albert Hall, so it’s going to be big.

“The set will last for about 20 minutes. “I’m pretty nervous, but excited. “We’ll be rehearsing on the Sunday and the event is following day.

“And because DJs don’t really do stuff like this, it’s something new for me and the other young people to experience.

“It’s mostly famous DJs that do these kind of gigs, so, for someone like me to do that, it’s different.”

Reece’s performance at The Music for Youth Proms will take place on Monday, November 13.
