Let’s stamp out fly-tipping for good

-

Councillor Karen Kennedy is calling on local authority bosses – and the public – to help stamp out fly- tipping.

She said constituents have been in touch with her on numerous occasions about dumping of everything from fridges to sofas at sites in Mossvale Square, in Paisley’s Shortroods, and Glencoats Drive, in Ferguslie Park.

Mrs Kennedy is now calling for the council to mount an awareness campaign to inform people of the anti-social nature of fly-tipping.

Last month, the Paisley Daily Express highlighted the fears of a Paisley man who was worried his block of flats would go up in flames if dumped rubbish was not moved soon.

Charlie Laird, who lives in Paisley’s Woodside Crescent, claimed discarded chairs, wood, a mattress and even a fridge had been abandoned in the stair well of his building since August.

The 60-year-old called on Renfrewshire Council to work out a coherent system that would see bulky items uplifted at set locations within the west end flats’ complex, and on set days.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, convener of Renfrewshire’s infrastructure, land and environment policy board, said:“Flytipping is illegal, thoughtless, damaging to the local environment and costly to resolve. The council will continue to crack down on fly- tipping. To report fly-tipping issues call 0300 300 0300.”
