MP in campaign to up Living Wage rates

-

Young workers should have their wages boosted by almost £3,000, according to MP Gavin Newlands.

The SNP politician insists Westminster must up its Living Wage from £7.50 an hour and extend it to those aged under 25.

He made the call during Living Wage Week and slammed the government for rolling out a“fake”rate – nearly £1 lower than recommendations from finance experts.

Mr Newlands said:“In Paisley and Renfrewshire North, 12,000 workers earn less that the Real Living Wage, making it harder for working households to escape poverty.

“Living Wage Week allows us to recognise those local employers who are paying the Real Living Wage, as well as repeating calls for all business and organisations to pay their workers a fair wage for their work.

“With prices rising as a result of the Tories’disastrous Brexit and interest rates going up, theTory UK Government should use this week to guarantee everyone a Real Living Wage.

“This would raise wages by nearly £3,000 a year, helping to lift more working households out of poverty.”

The UK government introduced its National Living Wage last April.

It ensures workers aged 25 and over receive an hourly rate of £7.50.

Experts from the Living Wage Foundation say it should be increased to match the Real Living Wage of £8.75 and given to all staff.

Mr Newlands, who represents Paisley and Renfrewshire North, says an increase would boost incomes by nearly £2,000 a year for those aged 25, while younger workers would benefit from an extra £2,700.

He added:“To arbitrary exclude those under the age of 25 is grossly unfair and economically illiterate.”
