Don’t be haunted by winter heating fears

-

New research from Scottish Gas highlights that having no heating or hot water would be the number one disaster for families in Renfrewshire this winter.

But many people have not taken action to ensure their homes are winter ready.

The survey found that many households have not carried out basic checks and services.

More than a third hadn’t checked their central heating system was working, almost 40 per cent hadn’t had their boiler serviced to check for problems, and a similar number hadn’t checked their carbon monoxide alarm.

The survey also found that while more than half knew technology could help make their homes more energy efficient, less than a third had smart meters installed.

Smart meters send automatic readings to the energy provider, and can help reduce bills.

West Scotland MSP Maurice Golden recently met Scottish Gas to find out how people can get ready for the cold weather, and he is urging local people to make sure they are prepared.

He said:“We all know winter temperatures can plummet in Scotland, so it’s vital that people make sure they are fully prepared.

“Check your heating, get a carbon monoxide alarm fitted and contact your energy supplier for help – they can provide you with advice on how to stay warm and what support is available.”
