Pool ace aims to pocket some cash

Phil’s marathon will help St Vincent’s Hospice

- David Campbell

A pool ace hopes to clean up for charity as he takes on a mammoth 24- hour challenge.

Howwood’s Phil Steven aims to pocket an amazing £2,500 for St Vincent’s Hospice by potting 6,000 balls in a single day.

Last year, dad- of- two Phil knocked in 5,000 in 15 hours and this time out he has decided to go one better.

The 52-year-old says he’s already been at the table preparing for the mammoth challenge and can’t wait to get started.

He said: “I was in for six hours training, so I’m starting to get into it now.

“Last year was really hard going - towards the end I had my boy spraying my back but it’s all for a good cause.

“We managed to raise £2,500 last year and that’s the total I’m hoping for again, but we’ve already reached 65 per cent so it looks like we will smash that.”

Phil, who works at Arnold Clark, was delighted with the support he received at Midton Bowling Club, in Howwood, last year and hopes for the same again this time round.

“There were about 50 people in the bowling club when I finished, so the support was amazing and hopefully it will be the same gain this time out,” he said.

“I was in bed for three days after the last time so I know what to expect. I’m hoping I’ll be able to do it in about 19 hours this time.”

Though he has no direct experience of the hospice , Phil says he knows the great work that it does and it was the obvious choice for his fundraising efforts.

He added: “Some friends have had experience with the hospice but, touch wood, we haven’t.

“But I know how much good work it does and it also relies on donations to do that work, so I felt it was the ideal choice to fundraise for.”
