Reece rocked the Royal Albert Hall
Young Paisley DJ wows youth proms with set
18.11.2017 He is just 15, but he was the centre of attention amid a crowd of 5,000 at the Royal Albert Hall.
DJ Reece Robertson, from Paisley’s Hunterhill, performed a 20-minute solo set backed by a 60-piece orchestra at the world-famous London venue.
As revealed in the Paisley Daily Express, the amazing opportunity came about after the St Andrew’s Academy pupil got involved with DJing as a music volunteer at the YMCA in Paisley.
He said: “It involves a lot of motivation, a lot of travelling and a lot of good contacts.”
Reece uses both vinyl and digital recordings to create his own unique sounds, and the huge audience heard just what he can do at the Music for Youth Proms event, at the Royal Albert Hall, where his final song was A Space Oddity, by David Bowie.
His first-ever trip to London came about through The Big Music Project and the Paisley YMCA, courtesy of the Paisley UK City of Culture Bid 2021 Fund.
And Reece was something of a trailblazer, playing with an orchestra.
“Because DJs don’t really do stuff like this, it’s something new for me and the other young people to experience,” he said.
“It’s mostly famous DJs that do these kind of gigs, so, for someone like me to do that, it’s different.”
Everyone at the YMCA in Paisley was delighted with Reece’s success.
Claire McGinlay, youth programme administrator, said: “We are all very proud of Reece.
“To perform with such confidence and skill at the Royal Albert Hall before a crowd of thousands is a real achievement.
“He went down very well with the enthusiastic audience, and we at the YMCA are sure this could lead to big things for Reece.”
