Storms cause havoc in Paisley area

-

Gusts of up to 55mph were recorded as the Paisley area was battered by a storm that saw almost two inches of rainfall in 24 hours in mid November 1978.

Property was damaged and roads were flooded.

A lock-up garage in Paisley’s Barterholm Road was torn by the wind, a tree was blown down in Houston Road, Bridge of Weir, but council workmen cleared the danger before the build-up of morning traffic.

A side street in Langbank was sealed off after flooding, and other roads – including Lonend, in Paisley, and Barrhead’s Blackbyres Road and Georgetown Road, near Bishopton, were hit.

And there was to be more on the way, according to Glasgow Weather Centre. A spokesman confirmed high winds and heavy rain would be repeated.

Strathclyde Regional Council road workers were out in force emptying gullies to relieve flooding caused by blockages from fallen leaves.

The storm brought treacherous driving conditions to the area.

Strathclyde Police traffic department had to deal with a spate of minor road accidents.

Andrew Clark, 28, of Paisley, was taken to the Royal Alexandra Infirmary with cuts and bruising after two cars collided in Glenburn Avenue.

He was allowed home after treatment.

High Watt, 73, of Rhubaan, St Andrew’s Drive, Bridge of Weir, suffered head injuries when his car hit a tree in Grahamston Road, Barrhead.

He too was able to go home after hospital treatment.
