Frame at last for pensioners

Their art is featured in exhibition

- Kenneth Speirs

There is nothing like retirement to explore your creative side and discover that you have a special talent.

And that is just what the residents of a sheltered housing complex in Paisley have done by taking part in art classes.

They have now mounted an exhibition of their work at Paisley Arts Centre, which the public can view when they visit the venue’s popular cafe for the next few days.

On show is all sorts of artwork by residents who range in age from 75 to 94 years old.

The art group is an initiative of Renfrewshire Sheltered Housing that was set up in a bid to help people combat loneliness and isolation.

Sally Logan, health and wellbeing co- ordinator for Renfrewshire Sheltered Housing, said: “A group of us from Darkwood, Springbank and Speirsfield meet every fortnight at Speirsfield Gardens and our mentor Jane McTaggart from White Cart Community Arts provides us with inspiration to learn new skills and show off our creative side through painting.

“This has helped us tackle one of the biggest issues of loneliness and isolation by building confidence and gaining a skill , and by having fun and making new friends.

“This has been so good for our health and wellbeing that we would like to share this with others knowing it could improve their quality of life.”

The exhibition will run until tomorrow.
