A schoolgirl is bringing festive joy to families in memory of her late brother.

Mariya Javed, eight, has been hand-picked to switch on the Christmas lights in Elderslie as a tribute to sports-mad Ahmar, 13.

The teen was struck down by a rare brain condition during karate practice.

Mum Sameena, 40, says she is proud her daughter has been chosen to bring happiness to her village.

She said: “Mariya is nervous, but she’s also really excited.

“After the year she has had, this brings a little joy, and that’s so important.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the well-wishes we’ve received since Ahmar passed away.

“It’s been so touching to hear how loved he was, it seems like everybody knew him.

“We’ll be raising money for Ahmar’s charity and that will go to helping other children and families who have suffered losses.

“Your support will help the children’s hospital and give a hand to others who have been through what we have.”

Elderslie Community Council has organised the festive bash outside the village hall this afternoon.

There will be stalls selling gifts, face painting for children, home baking and games.

Renfrewshire Foodbank will also be collecting donations for the needy.

Wallace Primary School Choir are leading carol singing before Mariya presses the button.

Cash raised from the fair and raffles will be donated to Another Star in the Sky – a charity set up in Ahmar’s memory to help other youngsters affected by illness.

Castlehead pupils took part in a 10k sponsored run and have already raised more than £500 in honour of their classmate.

He passed away after suffering a bleed on the brain in April.

Arteriovenous Malformation affects just one in 100,000 people and led to a major blood clot from which he never recovered.

The Ferguslie Cricket Club player spent 10 days in hospital and battled through several operations before mum Sameena and dad Javed, 43, made the heart- breaking decision to switch- off his life support machine.

His family have raised over £ 10,000 for worthy causes in Ahmar’s name, including the Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.

Mariya will switch on the Christmas lights at 6pm in Stoddard Square.
