We’re happy to have Jack back

Burgh boss hails return of striker Heron

- Craig Ritchie

Johnstone Burgh boss Colin Smith hopes striker Jack Heron can fire his side to glory after sealing his return to the club.

Heron resigned from the Keanie Park side last month following six months away, during which time he was playing for St Anthony’s.

But having failed to break into the McKenna Park first team, Smith revealed that Heron issued an SOS to the Burgh management team to come and get him after a frustrating few months warming the bench.

Smith and co- boss David Brolly happily obliged as they looked to shore up the lack of firepower for the Central District Second side – and Smith insists the move could prove to be the best for all parties.

He told Express Sport: “It is brilliant to have Jack back at the club because he was a really important player for us during his first spell.

“He signed for us after we played St Anthony’s a few weeks ago.

“He wasn’t playing every week and he spoke to us after the game about the possibility of maybe coming back to Burgh.

“We sorted it all out as soon as we knew he was interested and it is great to have him on board.

“Jack is someone we had always kept in touch with and there were never any hard feelings when he left first time around.

“With the position that we currently find ourselves in, he could prove to be the difference maker in big games. He is energetic and gets himself into the right positions and knows where the goal is.

“That could prove to be the difference maker in some matches, so he is a welcome addition to the squad.”

Johnstone Burgh return to Scottish Cup action this weekend as they travel to take on East Region side Lochee United.

The Tayside outfit currently sit fourth in the top flight of the East Region, sitting just behind leaders Linlithgow Rose.

Smith concedes it will be an uphill battle to reach the next round of the competition – regardless of how his side play.

But that doesn’t mean he has given up hope.

He added: “I must admit that I don’t know too much about them. But they are doing very well in a very good division.

“I expect it be an extremely tough game but we need to go there and have a real go if we are to stand any chance of going through.

“The important thing we need to do is believe in ourselves and stick to our gameplan.

“We were in a similar situation a couple of years ago when we faced Musselburgh at the same stage of the competition and they ended up going all the way to the final. The East Region sides tend to be strong.

“The league is the most important thing for us, that is our bread and butter but a cup run wouldn’t go a miss.”
