Stelios is in it to win it

Defender wants to enjoy victories again

- Craig Ritchie

Stelios Demetriou has issued a rallying call to his St Mirren teammates as they look to return to winning ways this afternoon.

The Cypriot defender admits that recent results in the Championship haven’t been good enough, with Saints currently without a league win in their last three outings. Their last three points came with a 2- 0 victory away to Dumbarton back on October 14.

Stelios concedes that the Buddies need to buck up their ideas if they are to match their ambition of achieving promotion this season.

And he reckons there is no time like the present as they look to build upon their win in the Scottish Cup last weekend as they head north to face Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Stelios told Express Sport: “We need to start winning games again because we haven’t won in the league for three weeks.

“It is time for us to get back to picking up three points and getting back on track for our targets.

“It will be a completely different game from the last time we played them.

“They were a new team then but their manager seems to have brought them together now and they are starting to pick up results.

“They haven’t conceded a goal for their last four or five games so we know it is going to be difficult.

“Hopefully we can be the side to score against them with the attackers we have.

“It’s another new ground for me but it is one that I am looking forward to.

“I have heard it is a big tidy park and that is good for us as a team. We are a side that likes to bring the ball down and play, so it should suit us.

“Hopefully we will do that. And if we do then I think we are capable of beating any team.”

Stelios has targeted a starting spot in the side this afternoon having returned to the starting XI last weekend.

But he admitted he has no qualms about having been on the bench in recent weeks, insisting the team comes first.

He added: “There is competition for every position and that is good for a team that wants to go and win promotion.

“The manager decides what he thinks is best for the team so he picks the side to go out on the park to win the game.”
