Book adventure at St Charles’

- Kathleen Speirs

Budding bookworms in Paisley have literally been getting into the storyline as part of a massive reading event.

St Charles’ Primary was transformed into colourful scenes from the world’s most famous children’s books.

Escape to Anywhere saw each classroom decorated in the style of well-known tales such as The Gruffalo and The Tiger Who Came To Tea.

Pupils from throughout the school made their way round every classroom, exploring a new tale along the way.

Literacy coordinator Courtney West said: “This event has been brilliant for showing children that reading can be fun. Books are a way of escaping reality and going on an adventure. They all thoroughly enjoyed it, and some of them said they could do it every day.”

Character images and elaborate decorations really made the bookworms feel like they were part of the story.

In every room the children could read the story together, before completing an activity related to that story and enjoy some discussion.

Escape to Anywhere was just one of many activities hosted by St Charles’ to mark National Book Week.

Pupils enjoyed quiet reading sessions with friendly therapet, Willow the old English sheep dog.

The event helped to promote reading aloud with confidence, and the session was enjoyed by primary three pupils.
