Flashback Sutton hopes history will repeat itself at Glebe Park

-

Here we go again

St Mirren FC is a club with a proud tradition – and a history to match.

They have been at the centre of the Scottish game since their formation in 1877.

Today, as St Mirren prepare to travel to Glebe Park on Saturday, we look back at how well the Buddies have fared against Brechin City at their rival’s home ground in the past.

St Mirren roll back the years on Saturday as they return to Glebe Park for the first time since 2009.

Back then, Saints ran out 3-1 winners over Brechin City in the Scottish Cup fourth round with two goals from Jim Hamilton and a Dennis Wyness strike separating the sides.

Another man who has fond memories of Glebe Park is current St Mirren striker John Sutton, who banged in a hat-trick for the Saints at the ground in their titlewinning 2005-2006 season to give his side a comfortable 3-0 victory.

The big frontman was in top form to bag a memorable three goals on a cold and wintry Tuesday night in March of that year.

The Englishman scored a typical John Sutton goal as he met a Hugh Murray cross from the right, beating his man to crash home a front post header to open his account.

It represented his first goal from open play that year.

He added his second just six minutes into the second half. Strong running down the right-hand side by Charlie Adam left him in the clear and able to send in a wicked left-footed cross which Sutton met to guide home.

Three minutes from time, Sutton was at it again. He picked up a loose ball on the angle of the box and drove into the Brechin box before unleashing a thundering right-footed shot past the on-rushing goalkeeper in front of a crowd of 691.

The travelling Black and White Army returned back down the A9 absolutely delighted with their night’s work.

John Sutton may not be the dynamic force he once was in front of goal but who would bet against him grabbing a goal at a ground that clearly holds happy memories for him.

The two sides have met 11 times over the years, with St Mirren winning seven, and Brechin taking the spoils on just one occasion when they won 2-0 at Glebe Park during the 2003-2004 Championship season.

John Sutton ended up with 17 goals in the 2005-2006 season from 39 appearances.
