Joy for Habbie Jemma as she teams up with Nike
Sponsorship deal is major boost in her bid for Tokyo glory
Kilbarchan AAC athlete Jemma Reekie has signed a major new sponsorship deal with sports giants Nike.
The 19-year-old announced the deal, which will run until 2020, this week and expressed her delight to get the backing of such a high profile company.
Reekie said: “It’s a dream come true. I’m very, very excited to say that I have officially signed my first Nike contract running up to Tokyo 2020.”
The Habbie, who has enjoyed a stunning breakthrough year on both domestic and international scenes, was quick to thank her team following the announcement.
“I’m so grateful to my coach Andy Young, training squad, and Aurum Sports Group for helping. And of course Nike – I’ll be forever grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to see what we can do together,” she said.
Reekie won two gold medals at the European Indoor Championships in January before topping the podium again with a win in the 1500m at the European under-20 championships in July, an event she looked extremely unlikely to even qualify for after taking ill during her preparations.
As a result of her success Reekie, who trains alongside European indoor senior champion Laura Muir, has been named as a finalist for the Young Sports Personality of the Year award at the 2017 Sunday Mail and sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards on December 7.
She is nominated alongside fellow finalists swimmer Scott McLay and canoeist Euan James.
The 2017 Sunday Ma i l sportscotland Scottish Sports Awards will celebrate the inspirational clubs, schools and individuals in sport on December 7 at the Doubletree by Hilton in Glasgow.
