Charity reaps rewards of student hairstylists’ hard work

- Kathleen Speirs

Christmas for hundreds of disadvantaged kids across Renfrewshire will be a bit brighter thanks to a group of student hairstylists.

Learners at West College Scotland (WCS) have been cutting and styling hair to raise money for Cash For Kids.

Yesterday saw a constant stream of clients in the chair for bouncy blow dries, tinsel extensions and more, with all the £ 270 takings going straight to the children’s charity.

Student Stephanie Thomson told the Express the charity salon was a huge success.

“It’s been a brilliant day,” she said.

“We’ve had people queuing out the door.

“Our most popular request has definitely been the tinsel extensions.

“Lots of students have been coming in, which is amazing because it’s all for a good cause.”

WCS’s hairdressing students host a commercial salon every Tuesday and Friday at the Paisley campus.

Members of the public can have their hair cut or styled at a discount price.

Hairdressing lecturer Michelle McManus decided it would be a good idea to donate money to charity for a change.

“Some of the stories you hear about these poor kids who have nothing are just horrendous.

“I thought that it would be good

The fact that Cash For Kids helps children in the local area is what drew Michelle to choosing them as their 2017 charity.

She explained: “To think there are children right on our doorstep who won’t get a Christmas is horrendous. I get emotional even thinking about it.

“The 18 students have sported Christmas jumpers, decorated their work stations and put in a real effort — I’m so proud of them.”

Due to the popularity of the tinsel extensions, there will be another pop-up salon on Friday, December 15 at the hair and beauty reception, from 10am till 1pm.

All proceeds will be added to the Cash For Kids donation.

Enjoy a family day out at RSPB Lochwinnoch’s Festive Fun and Christmas Tree Sale today, from 10am to 4pm.

There will be crafts and Santa, as well as real trees for sale. Mulled wine and mince pies will be available too.
