Pensioners hit out at mountain of waste

- Kenneth Speirs

Residents at a block of flats are drowning in rubbish because council bosses have failed to empty their recycling bins.

Mary Wilson, Gwen Ross, and Vivien Bradley claim their rubbish has not been picked up for five weeks at their flats in Erskine’s Blantyre Court – and they want action now before their bin store within the building is overwhelmed with bags of junk.

Eighty-one-year Mrs Wilson said: “Five weeks ago they stopped taking away the recyclable stuff.

“And every time I phoned them up I got told ‘Oh, yes, we’ll send somebody out’. “But they haven’t done so. “And it’s humming in there. It’s stinking. “The whole bin room stinks. “I’ve phoned them twice this week and I phoned them the week before. My friends have phoned them too, but to no avail.

“There doesn’t seem to be any plan.

“They’re supposed to take the recyclable stuff on a Tuesday every week.”

Gwen Ross, 67, also lives in the block of flats.

She said: “I phoned them before as well... they just keep saying ‘ We’ll get it done, we’ll get it done”.

Mrs Ross added that failure to collect the rubbish was a recurring problem.

“There’s no excuse, they just say they’ll get it sorted,” she added.

Fellow tenant Vivien Bradley, 70, said: “I’ve got rubbish sitting, waiting to come down with it.

“But it’s up to the ceiling in the store, so what’s the point bringing it down. “It’s ridiculous. “There are 13 flats and they are all occupied.

“We keep the door open at the store to let the smell out.”

Mrs Wilson added: “We want it cleared and kept clear.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said yesterday: “We aim to collect all bins on schedule but unfortunately there are occasions where bins are missed.

“We apologise to the residents affected and will work to ensure we maintain a high quality collection service.

“We attended the location as per normal schedules for collection and removed all residual waste and recyclate.”
