World cup has a silver lining for cyclist Jack

-

Paisley cyclist Jack Carlin enjoyed World Cup success at the double as he bagged silver and bronze in Canada.

The former Gleniffer High pupil has been in fine form as the Great Britain side continue to rack up the medals as the competition travels the globe.

His first medal came on the second day of action as he lined up alongside Callum Skinner and Phil Hindes to win team sprint silver at the Tissot UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Milton, Canada.

Skinner came into the lineup in place of Joe Truman, who was concentrating on the keirin, and the British sprinters comfortably beat Spain in the first round, booking a place in the final with a time of 44.018.

A duel with the world champions beckoned, and Carlin got the British trio off to a lightning quick start, pipping New Zealand by a thousandth of a second after the first 250m.

But that produced a reaction from the Kiwis, who went on to claim the gold in a time of 43.336, just over half a second faster than the GB Cycling Team, who stopped the clock in 43.922.

Carlin was back in action the following day, as he qualified fastest of the British riders, taking fourth place in a time of 9.826, in the opening stages of the individual sprint.

In the evening session’s semifinals, Carlin pushed Netherland’s Jeffrey Hoogland hard in both heats — just missing out in both matches by the smallest of margins to move into the bronze medal final.

The British rider met local hero Hugo Barrette in the bronze medal final and had too much power and speed for the Canadian, winning his match 2-0 to earn a first individual world cup medal.
