Look back in anger

Ross wants to see his squad fired up

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren boss Jack Ross wants his players to use their anger to drive the side to victory this afternoon.

Ross admits the annoyance of defeat was clear to see on his players’ faces as they returned to training at the start of the week.

And he is adamant that he has come to expect better from his players in the wake of the loss to Dumbarton.

St Mirren return to action at Glebe Park today, where they take on the Championship’s bottom side, Brechin City.

Darren Dods’ men remain rooted to the foot of the table, having failed to pick up a win in their opening 15 games of the campaign.

But, with Saints managing only to record a slender 2-1 win over Brechin last time out, Ross insists it won’t be an easy afternoon for his side.

He told Express Sport: “The reason why the league is so tight is because every team is competitive and capable of beating each other.

“The one thing that I would predict from my players is a reaction from last weekend.

“They let an opportunity slip through their fingers, so I expect their annoyance to shine through.

“They should also be angry that they lost that home record.

“I have seen Brechin a couple of times this season, outwith us playing them. On every occasion, they have been very competitive.

“It has been a challenging season for them, considering how it has panned out, but that doesn’t mean they are not a talented side.”

Ross revealed he is glad for the SEE PAGE 22 quick turnaround in fixtures as Saints bid to right the wrongs of their previous outing.

St Mirren remain within touching distance of Dundee United at the top of the table, having lost their lead last Saturday.

But Ross reckons there is still plenty to come from his side.

He added: “Regardless of who we are playing, we treat every opponent with the same respect.

“There are no games easier, or more important, than the other, and that doesn’t change just because of where Brechin find themselves in the table.

“The one thing I am glad about is we have the chance to bounce back relatively quickly.

“One defeat does not make us a bad side.

“We have had a relatively successful start to the season and it is a case of getting back to winning ways.”
