Four church friends all celebrate turning 90

- Kenneth Speirs

Not one, but four 90th birthdays were celebrated at the same church this month.

And, to mark the special occasions, a party for Sadie Hutchison, Joan Broadfoot, Margie Orr and Vi Lomax was held at St Andrew’s Trinity Church Hall, in Johnstone, where all four women are members.

They were presented with flowers, and a cake bearing each of their names at the four corners was cut and shared with their friends in attendance.

One of the organisers of the event was Irene Jones, who runs a sequence dance class at the church hall.

She said: “It was quite an event. Family and friends were invited.

“The ladies knew about the party, but were quite surprised at the turnout. “There were 70 people.” Irene, who has been a church members for 74 years, said the idea for a celebration came last year when it was mentioned at her sequence dancing class that two of its members — Joan and Margie – would be turning 90.

“So I said we should do something to celebrate,” she said.

“But then I heard two other church members would be turning 90 too, so we decided to include them too.”

Sadie and Joan, who are originally from Glasgow, and Margie and Vi, who are originally from London, were thrilled at the event and delighted by everyone’s kindness in organising the party and turning out for what was one of the more unusual birthdays they had ever celebrated.

“Joan thanked everyone for coming,” Irene said.

St Andrew’s Trinity Church is in Elm Drive and is led by the Rev Dr Charles Cameron.

As well as sequence dancing — which is ballroom done to a sequence — it hosts a number of community groups for young and old.

Anyone interested in joining the church or getting involved with its activities should call the office on 01505 337827.
