Pensioner kicked-off at Love Street
Paisley exile, 79-year-old Mrs Nora Ralphs, fulfilled a burning ambition as she kicked the gates at St Mirren’s football ground.
And bemused Saints manager Alex Ferguson laughed as he looked on.
Mrs Ralphs, who had lived in Manchester for the past 60 years, recalled childhood memories as she landed the kick.
Mrs Ralphs was one of many children who congregated outside the Love Street stadium 70 years previously listening to the roars of fans.
She made the day trip to Paisley courtesy of Manchester branch of Lions International, a charitable organisation as winner of a ‘special wish’ competition.
After meeting Ferguson and kicking the gates, Mrs Ralphs told of her ambition.
“When I lived in Carbrook Street, Paisley, I was among many children who ran through the street to the football stadium,” she said.
“We had to stand outside because, with only a ha’penny we could not get in.
“The only way we knew a goal had been scored was by the roars from inside and when we heard this we all joined in by kicking the gates.
“Just by kicking them again has brought the memories of my childhood back.”
The sprightly pensioner also visited her old school, Paisley Grammar, where she spent her happiest days.
But, with a twinkle in her eye, Mrs Ralphs confessed she was a “bit of a rogue” in her schooldays.
“I used to get into all sorts of mischief,” she said.
