But Paisley para table tennis star can look back on a great season

- Craig Ritchie

Martin Perry’s Las Vegas gamble never paid off as the Paisley para table tennis star fell out the US Open at the group stage.

Great Britain international Perry was part of a small selection of GB players who made the trip to Sin City but he will have been disappointed to have come away from the competition with nothing to show for his efforts.

Competing in the men’s class six tournament, Perry started on form.

But after a 3- 0 win in his opening game against the American Edward Schneider, he was beaten 3-0 by London 2012 Paralympic champion Rungroj Thainiyom from Thailand and a 3-1 loss in his final group match to the Chilean, Matias Pino Lorca meant that he did not progress to the knockout stages.

But despite his 2017 season coming to a premature end in the States, it has proven to be yet another ground-breaking year for the Buddie.

Most recently, he teamed up with Italian Raimondo Alecci to win gold at the Spanish Open.

Perry was in action in the men’s class 6 team event in Alicante and made it success at the double as he also bagged a bronze medal in the men’s class 6 singles competition.

The 23- year- old progressed from his group in the singles with two wins from three matches and defeated the Croatian Vjekoslav Gregorovic 3- 1 in the quarterfinal.

But the Great Bri t a i n international had to be content with bronze after falling to a 3-0 loss at the hands of Huang Jiaxin, from China, in the semi-final.

And alongside Alecci, the duo defeated Sweden and a combined team from Croatia and Japan before clinching gold with a 2-1 defeat of China.
