Strathgryffe Tennis and Squash Club duo John Meehan and Beth Moglia are national champions after winning the Scottish Junior Mixed Squash event.

The Houston players beat Lucy Murchie and Ben Orr from Crieff in the final 11-8, 11-6 at Scotstoun Sports Centre, Glasgow, on Sunday.

The winning pair had to battle from a game down in the semis to reach the final, seeing off David Taylor and Faye Fulton 9-11, 11-2, 11-4 before beating Murchie and Orr.

Moglia, 14, said:“John and I are really pleased to have won the competition.

“Ben and Lucy were good and we knew we had to put up a real fight to beat them.

“We tried to keep the rallies long because they are good at hitting winners and we needed to prevent that as much as possible.

“John was great at keeping the rallies going and not making errors.

“I like playing doubles, it brings the community together and it’s something fun that everyone can play.”

She added:“I am playing in the Scottish Junior Open in Edinburgh at the end of December, so that’s my next challenge.

“I have competed in it four times before and it’s always a great event.

“There are a lot of entries this year, so there will be lots of good matches and it will be very competitive, especially in the Under-15s category.

“I am going to try and play my best and see what happens.

“I’m training five times a week and hopefully that will help me at the Junior Open.”
