Sunshine and frost

“They were elasticated. “In the middle, there was an area that was exposed.

“He was completely exposed through the gap.

“There was an old dirty duvet cover, several milk cartons filled with water, a camping stove, a blow-up airbed.

“I told him to cover himself up with a duvet cover that was lying on the grass.”

Defence lawyer Kirsty McGeehan insisted it was one of the hottest days of the year and claimed her client had taken supplies to set up camp.

But PC McKinney fired back: “That wouldn't be attire I would choose to wear while sunbathing.

“I wear long johns when I am out on patrol in the winter. “I didn't see a tent.” Kelly — who was made redundant after a 22-year career as a carer at a disability centre — maintained he did not mean to expose himself at the Paisley reservoir on May 26.

He told the court his car was torched during a revenge attack when he was held in custody for the offence.

Kelly said: “The weather was glorious, I'm a pure sun worshipper.

“I was going to go up the road to get my shorts because I just had long johns and my jeans.

“I just thought I would brass neck it and pull my long johns up.

“I should have went up and got my shorts. I know I should have.

“I knew there was a wee hole at the front. “They were very loose on me. “I pulled them around to the side. “She told me to put some shorts on, I told her to mind her own business.

“They were just being nosy. I think they were overreacting.”

Sheriff James Spy found Kelly guilty after a trial and warned he can expect to face a harsh punishment.

He said: “Quite frankly, I do not know why he was walking around in his underwear.

“Clearly, he was exposing himself.

“He was told he was exposing himself. He knew he was exposed and did noting about it.”

Kelly, of nearby Nethercraigs Court, has been ordered to return for sentencing on January 24. The very cold and frosty weather Paisley has been experiencing over the Christmas break wi l l continue today.

Temperatures will fall to -2°C and go no higher than 2° C, according to the Met Office.

However, there will be plenty of sunshine.
