Hawkins aiming for Games glory in 2018

- Athletics

Callum Hawkins has revealed he is targeting a medal at next year’s Commonwealth Games.

The Ki l b a rchan AAC marathon runner has been named in the Scotland squad for the games in Australia’s Gold Coast in April.

And he insists they are his primary focus before he turns his attention to the European Championships later in the year.

Haw k i n s said: “The Commonwealth Games in April are my main aim.

“I’m going to the Gold Coast and, hopefully, going for a win or a medal.

“After that, it depends on how well the Commonwealth Games goes and how well I recover.

“I’m looking at the Europeans after that, but that’s going to be pretty tight — they’re only 15 weeks apart. It will either be the Europeans or a big city marathon at the end of the year.”

It’s been a fantastic 2017 for the Elderslie athlete following a number of stunning performances.

However, Hawkins admits that his performance at the summer’s World Championships is what stands out for him.

He added: “My highlight has got to be finishing fourth at the World Championships in London — and actually running in London at a major event.

“It’s always incredible and the crowds always get behind you, especially being British.”
