OFF YOUR TROLLEY Thoughtless shoppers slammed

- Kathleen Speirs

Angry residents have the support of a local councillor in the fight against abandoned supermarket trolleys.

The trolleys from ASDA at Linwood Road, Paisley, are being dumped in various locations in the town.

Councillor Stephen Burns believes one of the worst areas affected is Station Road in the town.

He told the Express: “There is abosultely no excuse for people aimlessly dumping trolleys on the main road or any road for that matter.

“This has always been a problem but myself and members of the local community have noticed a sharp rise in the number of trolleys being left around over the Christmas and New Year period.

“I don’t know whether this is because there are more people in the supermarkets or people are busier. “Either way, it is highly unacceptable.” The Phoenix Retail Park supermarket giant serves a wide area with thousands of Renfrewshire residents coming through its doors each year.

But lazy and inconsiderate shoppers are then leaving empty trolleys behind or stealing them for another purpose.

While Councillor Burns understands that ASDA cannot control the behaviour of customers outside the premises, he believes bosses should be taking action by collecting the trolleys.

“I contacted ASDA head office and was put through to customer servies who didn’t want anything to do with it,” Councillor Burns added.

“I was just being passed around, I got nowhere with them. “Something has to be done soon.” The Paisley South West councillor, who says the worst-affected areas are the surrounding streets of Linwood Road and Station Road, maintains there are multiple dangers as a result of what he calls “trolley dumping”.

“First of all, it’s dangerous for passing vehicles and pesdestrians,” he added.

“I’ve had one member of the public calling me about three damaged cars as a result of this., “Not only that but it’s so unsightly. “We should be proud of our town and seeing broken trolleys dumped on grassy areas or fields is just ridiculous.

“People need to take responsibilty for the area round them.”
