Saints open for business
Hard-up St Mirren were moving into a new line of business.
The Paisley club, heavily in debt, negotiated a deal with a leading trading company to run a Sunday market in their Love Street forecourt, we reported in January 1982.
The market was to open within weeks and the club’s David Murdoch admitted that lack of cash was the principal reason.
He said:“We believe that this is a way of raising additional revenue in the light of the club’s financial position.
“But I think that other clubs are also looking at sources of raising money particularly when, this winter, they are losing revenue at the gates.
“Any income from the market will go into general funds and be utilised for the various responsibilities of the club such as salaries, ground improvements and general administration.”
