Another broken Brexit promise

-

Once again, only a few weeks into the new year, we have been let down by the Tories at Westminster.

Before Christmas, I wrote about the blatant power grab by Westminster and the continuing uncertainty surrounding our devolved powers in the wake of the travesty that is the EU Withdrawal Bill.

After shutting the Scottish Government out of the process, the Tories have once again shown their true colours and backtracked on yet another promise.

David Mundell, the Secretary of State for Scotland, promised that amendments would be made to the legislation for leaving the EU, yet, the UK government amendments published last week, do nothing to revise Clause 11 or prevent the power grab that the Scottish Parliament faces.

Well, the SNP will certainly not take this lying down.

Ian Blackford, the SNP Westminster leader, highlighted the failure and condemned the Prime Minister for the chaos engulfing the UK Government over Brexit, and its failure to keep its promise to protect Scotland’s devolved powers.

Then, during Prime Minister’s Questions, Pete Wishart asked her what score she would give herself on a scale of one to 10 on her government’s work on Brexit.

Holding up a card saying “nil points” in the chamber, the MP conveyed the complete lack of trust more than half of Scotland has in their UK Government.

A survey published last week confirmed the growing concern that the Tories are taking us down a “reckless and damaging” Brexit path, with a full 69 per cent of Scots responding that they think the UK government is handling the process badly - it’s clear that it’s not only in the Eurovision Song Contest that the UK is scoring nil points now.

It must be noted that it’s not only Brexit that Westminster are now backtracking on.

You may all remember back in 2014, in the run up to the independence referendum, we were repeatedly told that a no vote would be the only way to protect our pensions.

Well, just like the assurances made by David Cameron that this was the only way to ensure Scotland remained in the EU, we once again face the backlash of 2014’s biased, fear inducing propaganda.
