Renfrew Ladies are gearing up for another successful campaign

-

They may have some new rivals, but Renfew Ladies are fully focused on their own success.

There is a buzz about women’s football at the moment with the accouncement that St Mirren have launched their own side.

But there is already a club on Renfrewshire’s doorsteps that is making waves year-in, year-out.

Renfrew, based at the junior side’s New Western Park, are gearing up for the season which is set for it’s big kick-off come March. Following promotion to the First Division,‘Frew finished last season in fourth place and narrowly missing out on making it a back-to-back success.

But with a new squad, bolstered by the addition of players from League Two winners, Morton Ladies, things are only looking up for the side.

For assistant coach Neil Paylor, the new season can’t come quick enough, with the side now back in to full training.

And following on from their “surprisingly”successful campaign last time out, he revealed that the excitement is building among the squad.

Paylor told Express Sport:“I think we perhaps surprised ourselves last season. We always knew that we had a good team but I don’t know if we believed we would go on to achieve what we ultimately did.

“It is a very competitive division and we knew that we would have to be at our best. But we knuckled down, beat some tough teams and scored a few goals along the way.

“But the side won’t allow itself to simply sit back and be glad with what we have done. The ambition for us is to continue on progressing up the the leagues, earning promotions along the way, but also to continue to develop the squad, the club and the youth section a long the way.

“We need to be relative to what we can achieve. We have got a good blend of youth and experience and we have a few younger players coming through that would be good additions to any squad.

“We have had to deal with a lot of injuries in the past, but if we could get through the season with a fully-fit squad, then we have every chance of mounting another promotion push.”

St Mirren Women’s side will also be entering the league pyramid this season – albeit not in the same division as‘Frew.

And although they now have some rivals, Paylor insists it is good to see professional sides backing the women’s game.

He added:“It can only be a good thing – and there is no harm in a little competition either.

“Hopefully they can hit the ground running and we look forward to getting the opportunity to face them.”
