Flashback Twice was nice for Paul

-

Well that’s the transfer window done and dusted for another few months and there wasn’t too much drama to report.

Obviously, St Mirren wrapped up the addition of Falkirk attacker Myles Hippolyte, with the Englishman being handed an 18-month contract with the Buddies.

Historically, Saints have never really been one to take it right down to the wire, though Jack Ross has made something of a habit of it, with Harry Davis another to check in this time last year.

But there was one man that Saints loved so much that they rolled the dice on D-Day twice in one season.

The League Cup final may have only been five years ago, but you would be forgiven if you felt like it was a lifetime.

One man that captured the imagination in that time was the addition of full back Paul Dummett. Transfer drama

St Mirren FC is a club with a proud tradition — and a history to match.

They have been at the centre of the Scottish game since their formation in 1877.

Today, we look back at Paul Dummett, who arrived from Newcastle, and would quickly become a fans favourite.

Another Englishman, the brawny full-back arrived in Paisley as a fresh-faced youngster from Newcastle United.

The very fact that he joined from a Premiership club was enough to excite a number of St Mirren fans.

Dummett first arrived on August 31, 2012, and forced his way into Danny Lennon’s first team after eventually making his debut in a 2-0 win over Hearts in September.

His first goal for the club then came in 1-1 draw with St Johnstone, but with January looming, and his loan deal up, Dummett’s time in Paisley looked to be numbered despite the fact Saints were keen to keep him.

After returning to St James’ Park upon the completion of his deal, any dreams of Dummett returning to St Mirren appeared to be dashed when he was handed his senior debut for Newcastle in a FA Cup tie away to Brighton and Hove Albion.

But the fact the Magpies came away on the wrong end of a shock defeat might have played into St Mirren’s hands as they, once again, swooped on deadline day.

He finally returned on January 31 and picked up where he left off, playing the full game as Saints clinched their first ever League Cup.

And his role will never be forgotten after he set up Steven Thompson to put the Saints 2-1 ahead.

Of course, he has since gone from strength-to-strength and has even captained Newcastle United upon occasion.

A goal against Manchester United even captured the headlines a season or so ago.
