I’ll help Saints get over the line

New boy Flynn on aiding the Buddies to league glory

- Craig Ritchie

Ryan Flynn insists he has been left impressed by the character of his new teammates since making the switch to St Mirren.

The winger marked his first start for the club since joining from Oldham Athletic with a win over Queen of the South on Saturday.

The former Falkirk man didn’t look out of place at all throughout the match, with his runs down the right flank terrorising Queens’ fullback Scott Mercer during the first half.

But Flynn says it was last Friday’s win away to Dunfermline that proved to him that his new side has what it takes to earn themselves promotion back to the top flight this season.

He said: “As soon as I spoke to the gaffer about coming back to Scotland the aim was to help St Mirren get back to the Premiership.

“They were in a great position already before I came in, but I have been impressed by the way in which they play.

“The Dunfermline game showed that it is not just good football that they play, but the character of the team was brilliant and they thoroughly deserve to be where they are.

“I am just here to help the boys and get them over the line.”

Many had singled out Saturday’s clash as a potential banana skin for the Buddies.

But with Dundee United’s clash away to Inverness postponed due to the weather, St Mirren managed to extend their lead at the top to 14 points.

Goals from defenders Liam Smith and Harry Davis sealed the deal - but Flynn reckons their defensive qualities were just as admirable over the 90 minutes.

He added: “We know how big the league games are but this was another chance to put three points on the board.

“We are making it difficult for people to catch us now.

“Personally I was delighted to start my first game.

“I thought we played really well in the first half because we passed the ball about and gave them a lot of problems.

“I thought we were very professional in the way we seen out the game.

“They never had any real clearcut chances and, in all honesty, we could have been a bit more ruthless, especially in the first half.

“I thought the defenders were great, take the goals out of Harry and Liam’s games and I still think they were brilliant.

“The way we got the ball out to our full-backs helped to dictate the tempo.”
