Still room for improvement

-

Paisley Rugby Club captain Ben Frost couldn’t hide his pride after watching his side extend their lead at the top of the table.

The weekend win over Lenzie confirmed the side’s dominance in the BT West Division Two, although the side had to battle back to secure victory.

Frost said:“Once again the boys have worked really hard to secure a bonus point win and I’m proud of them. Every point is going to count and we have to keep this momentum going.

“Lenzie battled well, but I was always confident we would win well if we played our game at the right intensity.

“They maybe lost their discipline as they tired towards the end of the match, but we have room for improvement ourselves if we’re honest.

“Lenzie will be looking for revenge next weekend and we have to up our game once again if we want to beat them on their own patch.” line after a kick forward.

Berry demonstrated his speed of thought and chipped over the chasing defenders in to the space behind, before diving over the line just left of the posts.

Martin McKellar thought he had converted the try, but the referee overruled his touch judges and the score remained 5-5.

The match evened itself out now as both sides were able to capitalise on poor discipline, with penalties being converted at either end by Lenzie’s kicker and Paisley’s McKellar.

Sadly though for McKellar that would be the last of his points in this match and he was replaced by Allan Berry due to suffering a torn ear after some brave defending inside the Paisley 22.

Unfortunately for the visitors, much of their hard work in the first half was undone straight from the restart for the second period.

The ball was gifted to Colin McKay following a Lenzie mistake and the pacy winger finished brilliantly from just inside his own half, evading a number of defenders along the way. Jamie Murchie was deputising for McKellar at fly-half and his conversion was successful to move Paisley in to a 15-8 lead. Paisley then extended their lead to 18-8 after Murchie converted a penalty and it’s fair to say that Lenzie were starting to struggle.

As the match moved towards the final quarter Paisley were able to extend their lead following an excellently executed set-piece move off the back of a scrum. Allan Berry was the man going over in the corner this time.

Murchie again converted from a tight angle and Paisley now had a comfortable lead with the score at 25-8.

Much to their credit, Lenzie were able to rally one last time and scored straight from the kick-off having created another overlap with good backs play. The conversion was missed once again to leave it 25-13 on the scoreboard.

Paisley were able to regain control of the match and continue their search for a bonus point. Lenzie, however, lost their discipline and were reduced to 14 men.

Paisley eventually took advantage of their numerical advantage and scrumhalf Cameron Cobb touched the ball down after a hard-driven Paisley scrum from five-metres out.

Murchie again converted well and the Paisley fans were delighted that their team had all-but secured yet another bonus-point victory.

Despite Lenzie losing their discipline once again, to a red card this time, Paisley weren’t able to extend their lead any further before the referee’s whistle was blown for full-time and the match finished 32-13 to the league leaders.
