Sophie’s amazing appeal raises cash for Accord

Putty sold like hotcakes

14.02.2018 A mini philanthropist is making life a little brighter for those affected by lifelimiting illnesses.

Sophie Lumsden has been creating and selling her own Silly Putty in a bid to raise money for Accord Hospice.

The generous 10-year-old came up with the bright idea in November and has since sold over 200 pots.

The Todholm Primary School pupil told the Express she just wanted to give something back.

“At the time in school we were raising money for our residential trip,” Sophie said.

“I thought to myself why can’t we raise money for charity too?

“We had learned a little bit about Accord Hospice in class, so that’s why I chose it. “I’ve loved the whole project.” Tapping into the growing popularity of the trendy kids’ toy, Sophie set up a putty-making station in the dining room of her family home.

With mum Joanne, dad Steven and 15- year- old brother Jack on hand, she created hundreds of pots to sell for the hospice.

“Putty isn’t hard to make – it’s just really messy,” Sophie added.

“Not many people would want to make it at home for that reason, so I thought I could make it in my house.

“My mum and dad were okay with it, but it did ruin the kitchen table.

“We’re getting another one because we’re moving house though, so it wasn’t so bad.”

Taking orders in each classroom before setting up shop during playtime and lunchtime, the budding entrepreneur raised £86.63 for Accord.

The hospice’s senior fundraiser David McFadden invited Sophie along for a tour of the hospice to explain how the cash boost would be spent.

David told the Express that staff at Accord are impressed with the little girl’s efforts.

“Sophie is brilliant and a force to be reckoned with,”David said.

“What she has done is amazing and will help go towards the refurbishment of our In- Patient Unit.”

On her visit to the centre Sophie, who lives in Crookston, added that she is “so pleased” she chose to support Accord on Paisley.

“I only knew a little bit about what the hospice does, but I learned lots when I visited,” she said.

“I just love the fact that they help people every day.

“It’s important to help people like that. I loved my visit.”
