Kids go digital

-

College bosses in Paisley have successfully launched coding clubs at a further three Renfrewshire secondary schools.

The sessions at St Andrew’s Academy, Gleniffer High and Gryffe High aim to encourage S1 and S2 pupils to use of the BBC micro: Bit, among other digital programmes, and inspire them to get more involved in coding.

Organisers at West College Scotland (WCS) said the clubs have been well attended, with youngsters enjoying making animations using digital tools and learning coding skills.

Delivered by Microsoft Education experts, WCS curriculum quality leader David Renton and computing lecturer Amanda Ford, working alongside STEM ambassadors from HNC and HND Computing classes, the clubs have involved a wide range of activities, from making jelly babies scream to creating the music from Star Wars.

Steven Gould, faculty head, business and computing at Gleniffer High School, said: “We have tried to run clubs ourselves in the past, but it’s difficult to find the time to develop a club programme and resources to make sure the experience is really beneficial to the pupils.

“The structure and support from WCS in has been ideal.”

Colin Deans, computing science teacher at Gryffe High, added: “Our school believes this is a fantastic opportunity to engage pupils in an exciting and brand new project based in computing science.”

And Lynsey Melrose, principal teacher of business education and computing science at St Andrew’s Academy, added: “Our school is trying to raise the profile of computing science as a subject choice in S3, particularly with girls.”

Youngsters from Paisley Grammar, St Benedict’s High and Renfrew High have previously took taking part in WCS’ Digital Xtra Coding In The Classroom project.
