A storming success
Flipping brilliant win for Paisley gymnastics club
A Paisley gymnastics group is defying gravity after scooping a prestigious accolade.
Storm Gymnastics, which trains at the The Robertson Centre, picked up the Lord Provost’s Award at the Sports Person of the Year Awards, in Glasgow.
With Sir Andy Murray and Dame Kelly Holmes named as previous winners, the sports club is over the moon to be recognised for its work.
Head coach Janet McClintock told the Express team Storm couldn’t be happier.
“I still can’t believe we won this award,” she said.
“To think of who has been handed this prize before us is just amazing.
“It’s such a boost for the club. I’m so proud of everyone involved.”
With weekly sessions in Paisley and Glasgow, more than 250 youngsters flip, twist and jump their way to success with Storm.
All children are welcome regardless of gender, ability, age or social background to take part in gymnastics to improve their technique, get fit or just to have fun and make friends.
High- flyers also train at the club, with many current Scottish champions in the squad.
At the recent Scottish Tumble Competition in Dunfermline — the club’s first competition of 2018 — Storm took home medals in every category it entered.
A further three gymnasts will now move onto the finals next month with a hope of winning the title and representing Scotland in June.
Janet believes the achievements from all of their members are no mean feat.
She said: “What made us frontrunners for the award is what we achieved with the resources that we have.
“We do not have all the topof-the-range facilities like lots of other clubs.
“Yet, at competitions, we’re up there with the best of them.”
Storm is currently looking into opening its own purposebuilt facility, with more classes introduced as a result.
