We’ll keep calm and carry on, says captain McGinn

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren skipper Stephen McGinn insists there is nothing to panic about despite a crushing defeat to Livingston.

Instead, the midfielder says it is time to focus on the remaining games of the season as the Buddies look to clinch the league tittle.

Livi pulled themselves closer to Saints at the top of the Championship with a 4- 1 win at the weekend. However, St Mirren remain 11 points clear at the summit.

McGinn says his side just have to take it on the chin after falling to their first league defeat since a 1-0 loss to Dumbarton way back on December 2.

McGinn said: “We have to take our medicine.

“I thought we started the game well, but we were second to a lot. The first goal we lost changed a lot.

“Livingston are second in the league for a reason, but off the back of the run of games that we have had, we are happy with where we are in terms of the table.

“We never saw it coming, but the one thing I would say is we have had a few sore ones this year. The way we play, we don’t draw a lot of games. We win games, but when we are losing, we tend to leave ourselves open at the back.

“That can leave you exposed, and we took another sore one on Saturday.

“But we haven’t lost many games all season and we have always responded well to them, so we have to stay positive.

“We are bang on our personal target for this quarter again so, with two home games coming up, we are looking forward to getting back to it.”

With the rumour mill in full flow last week surrounding the future of St Mirren manager Jack Ross, many pointed to the fact that it may have caused upset in the camp in the run up to Saturday’s game.

Ross turned down the advances of Barnsley on Thursday night, but instead of it having a detrimental effect on the side, McGinn reckons it is something that the dressing room takes with a great deal of pride ... and become used to.

He added: “With the success we have had over the past 12 months, there has been rumours about the manager on three different occasions.

“There has also been rumours about Stevie Mallan and Lewis Morgan, so we are becoming used to it.

“We take a bit of pride in it almost because it is a bit of a pat in the back for the players as well.

“I don’t think it is an excuse for the result either.

“We have all been in this together and it is something we want to achieve as a group.

“We have hit a speed bump at the weekend but it is how we bounce back from that that matters.”
