Rally round for Leighanne

MP seeks support for cancer victim

- Kathleen Speirs

Renfrewshire residents are being encouraged to show their support for a mum who is suffering from brain cancer.

Leighanne Sanderson, from Renfrew, has been diagnosed with a brain tumour and has only been given 18 months to five years to live.

The 38-year-old’s family and friends are now rallying behind her to help raise funds so she can create happy memories with her loved ones, including her son Kieran, 14.

MP for Pa i s l e y and Renfrewshire North, Gavin Newlands, is urging people to support their fundraising efforts.

He said: “Leighanne was delivered devastating news and her family and friends have rightly come to her aid to help support her during this difficult time.

“I can’t begin to imagine the distress that the Sandersons are going through at this time and it’s only right that the local community offers all the support they can to the family.

“The Sandersons want to help Leighanne create positive memories and I’m sure our community can contribute to that by supporting their fundraising efforts.”

Leighanne was misdiagnosed by doctors several times.

She was told she had meningitis, migraines, tinnitus and sinusitis before finally getting the devastating news she had a brain tumour.

By that time the cancer had reached stage four and was incurable.

The former NHS physio assistant underwent surgery to remove 95 per cent of the tumour and was treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

This Saturday the Sandersons have organised a charity hypnotist and band event at the David Lloyd Club in Renfrew.

“I would encourage everyone to buy a ticket for this event,” Gavin added.

“This sounds like a great night, and you will also be supporting a worthy cause in the process.

“There will be numerous ways that you can help Leighanne out and I would call on everyone to support her during this time.”

Saturday’s charity night is just one of a number of fundraising events organised by the people of Renfrew in support of the inspirational mum.

Youngsters from across the region will take part in L&L Love Aid to support the relatives and friends of Leighanne and little Layla Greene

Three-year-old Layla tragically lost her cancer battle with neuroblastoma last month.

Young dancers from the Jazzle Dazzle dance school came up with the idea of a mass dance event, bringing together young people from different clubs or groups.

Leighanne’s sister Katie, 33, told the Express the L& L Love Aid, could help give her nephew Keiran a brighter future.

She said: “I can’t thank Jazzle Dazzle enough for what they are doing.

“Leighanne has not been given a very good outlook, so our focus now is to raise as much money as we can to make sure her son Kieran is looked after.

“He is only 14. That is our priority now.

“Leighanne has been a fighter all the way through and she is still fighting.”

Tickets for the hypnotist and band night cost £20 and can be bought from Katie Sanderson on 07585508559.

Rehearsals for L&L Love will be held each Sunday between 4pm and 6pm at The Prince of Wales Masonic Halls for children aged over 10.

All the proceeds will be spilt between Leighanne’s family and the Glasgow Children’s Charity.
