Cameron’s counting down to Shield clash

Renfrew ace will star for Scotland against Northern Ireland

- Craig Ritchie

Renfrew Juniors’ Cameron Clark has been building up for Scotland’s upcoming Centenary Shield clashes with a host of friendly appearances for the national side.

The defender, son of Renfrew boss Colin Clark, is currently on loan at the junior side from Livingston in a bid to get firstteam football under his belt.

He has clearly caught the eye following his call- up to the Under- 18 SSFA Schoolboy international squad for next month’s tournament. The first clash will be against Northern Ireland on Friday, March 9, at Greenock Morton’s Cappielow Park.

The side are currently getting put through their paces with a host of friendlies – although the weather has disrupted preparations, with games being called off or shortened.

The planned game against Stirling Albion was the first to fall foul to the snow that made travel dangerous and the pitch unplayable.

However, the fixture against Spartans FC at Ainslie Park did take place but there was also some difficulty with that game. A shortened booking time available made the match just 40 minutes each way, while a referee never turned up, leading to a coach to stand in, although that never stopped the youngsters running out 2-0 winners.

Most recently, the side took on the English Independent School’s FA representative side at Toryglen Football Centre.

Again the weather had an impact with snow covered outdoor pitches threatening the game taking place. Another shortened game was again on the cards. The home team started well and threatened from the start with excellent possession and good defending as the coaching staff again tried various players and formations to establish the team for the Centenary Shield matches.

The game unfortunately had to be ended before a final result could be decided and it finished 1-1.

Scotland now play against Stirling University at the Gannochy Pavilion astro pitch this afternoon.
