Youngsters love diving into writing

- David Campbell

Pupils at a Paisley primary are getting their creative juices flowing thanks to a new writing initiative.

Children at Todholm Primary School have all been given individual journals as part of the Dive into Writing scheme to help them express themselves.

The project, which is a partnership between Renfrewshire Council and Strathclyde University, aims to encourage young people to take pleasure in writing and instil a love of the craft.

Claire Hall, principal teacher, said: “Staff have been working in partnership with Renfrewshire Council and Strathclyde University on Dive into Writing - the aim of which is to encourage our pupils to write more for pleasure, and embed a love of writing.”

The children have been allowed to design their own front covers.

Ms Hall added: “The children designed their journals and were keen that each lined page was accompanied by a blank page, so they could illustrate their writing or work on newspaper pages and comic strips.

“They were insistent that a school tie featured on the design, and they voted for their favourite writingrelated quote.”

Teachers insist there will be no restrictions placed on writing and Ms Hall added: “They are able to write about what they want in a style that they want.

“They are more motivated than ever to write and, as a result, are writing more frequently and for longer periods of time. They are so proud of their journals and are keen to share what they have written with others. We are delighted with the impact the journals are having.”
