Pupils serve up a treat for Come Dine With Us

- Chris Taylor

Teen chefs proved they had the recipe for success with a special school dinner.

Castlehead High invited families for the Come Dine With Us evening.

They took over the kitchen to rustle up perfect plates of pasta during the course to promote positive mental health.

Lindsay Moffat, principal teacher of wellbeing, hailed the efforts of the cooks.

She said: “The after- school project involved students planning, shopping for and preparing healthy meals before sitting together to eat.

“Dinner chat centred around mental and physical wellbeing.

“The group has been meeting every Friday for the last 10 weeks and has successfully achieved a Hi5 Award qualification to reward their outstanding commitment.

“Parents, family and school staff were invited along to sample their hard work, all planned by the students.

“Guests and chefs sat together and shared their wellbeing stories and strategies.

“Senior pupils have been trained in promoting positive mental health and wellbeing and helped guide the sessions.

“Parents and staff were very impressed with the standard of food served and by the confidence and communication skills of the young people involved.”

The third year pupils joined forces with Renfrewshire Youth Services and Hearty Lives teams for the project.

It aims to smash the taboo surrounding discussions about mental health, while learning new skills.

Miss Moffat added: “I am delighted that we have been able to create and run such a successful program which tackles physical and mental wellbeing, as well as promoting family learning.

“We are eager to run more projects like this in the future and have no doubt that we will get even more parents and students on board next time.”
