Hagg Bar A still on top after impressive win

District league teams battle it out

- Craig Ritchie

Darts players from Paisley started the season run- in with a raft of action across the town.

In the First Division, Hagg Bar A kept up the pressure on the rest of the teams as they stay two points clear of the pack with a very impressive 8-1 victory over local rivals Keystone A.

The Hagg boys can’t afford any slipups though as they are being chased all the way by Pickwicks who recorded their own 8-1 win over Gleniffer Hotel to make sure they stay at the head of the chasing pack.

Pickwicks now enjoy a four-point gap as St Peter’s lost their home game to Burgh in a very close 5- 4 result which keeps the Burgh team just about in touch with the leaders as they sit in sixth place.

The defeat doesn’t affect St Peter’s position as they maintain third, but it does put a bit of daylight between them and the leading two.

The biggest score of the night was at Court Bar where the home team trounced Hagg Bar C 9-0 to leapfrog Flying Horse A and they made the home advantage count in a tense 5-4 win over Arthurlie Inns.

The results mean that there is now a two-leg difference in favour of Court Bar which gives them fourth place in the table.

The last game in the division saw Pockets Red claim their fourth victory of the year as they brought back both points from Railway Inn after another tense 5-4 result.

Other results around Railway Inn mean that even though they were beaten they actually climb the table thanks to the four legs they won.

There are now four teams on eight points only separated by four legs with Keystone A and Pockets Red sharing eighth place.

In the Second Division, there was a hiccup for leaders Pockets Black as they lost only their second game of the season in a home game to a spirited Inkerman Bowling Club side who took the points after a great 6-3 win.

The Kelburn would have relished that result as they made full use of home advantage, taking the win with a 7-2 result against bottom-placed Hazel Pirates B.

The win for The Kelburn means that they sit on the same points as Pockets Black and are only one leg behind them, but they will have to be at their best to stay there as they face Cafuffals in the next game.

Cafuffals will be in a jubilant mood too after they won 7-2, their victory coming at the end of an away game against Hazel Pirates.

Sitting just three legs behind and on the same points total as Cafuffals in fourth place are Tartan Rose who also had a super 7-2 win at home over Flying Horse B.

Hazel would have been looking to close the gap on those above them as they faced 10th-placed Kelburne Cricket Club, but it was the cricketers who left with the spoils after another tense 5-4 victory, with the win pushing them up the table into ninth, while dropping the Hazel team into eighth.

The teams now sit on the same points total and are separated by a difference of two legs, however, with Kelburne facing the league leaders in the next game, they will find progress hard.

The last game of the week saw Keystone B take on Court Bar B and it was the home team that lifted the glory after yet another 5-4 contest, with the win pushing them into seventh place in the table and two points clear of The Hazel Arms.

The treble 20 took another hammering this week as there was a total of 16 maximums recorded to take the season’s total to 288, with the St Peter’s duo of Drew and Andy Callary both sitting on 13 for the year.

There were a lot of quick games in the league this week too, with 27 being finished in 18 darts or less with the best of the night being 15-dart leg from Hazel Pirates player Andy McGrath, and a 17-dart leg from Hagg Bar A’s Ian Thomson.

The highest finish of the week also came from Thomson as he checked out on 136.
