We knew it would be tricky

Samson defends team

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren goalkeeper Craig Samson has rejected assertions that Saints disappointed at the weekend when they came up against a stubborn Brechin side.

The keeper insists that the Buddies deserved all three points, after Kyle Magennis’ first-half free kick sealed the win.

Samson reckons that some quarters were harsh on the Paisley side in the wake of the 1-0 victory over the basement side, and says that the players were just happy to come away with the points.

He said: “I read a couple of reports that we stuttered over the line against Brechin.

“But Brechin are a side that are probably deserving of results they’ve not had.

“We took the game seriously on Saturday and we knew it was going to be very tricky. It is a good result and another three points.

“It doesn’t matter who you are getting three points against. They all just count the same, so if we can go and keep winning matches then that is all that matters.

“We know where we are at the moment and we know the teams are chasing us. But it is a game at a time.

“The more games that we win, the harder it is for teams to catch us.

“We have only lost two games since December and, if we keep taking care of business, we know we will get across the line.

“We know how good Dundee United can be, but we are going into the game trying to get all three points.”

Samson racked up his 40th clean sheet for St Mirren in the weekend victory, reaching the milestone in his second spell with the Paisley side.

And with a blockbuster clash with Dundee United on the cards this Friday, Samson is keen to keep them coming.

He added: “At the moment, I think it is important for us to keep that run of clean sheets going.

“Although we lost quite heavily to Livingston, in terms of games, we have had five clean sheets in this quarter so far.

“I wasn’t aware that Saturday was my 40th for St Mirren, but that is a nice little achievement for myself.

“But at the moment it is all about the team and what we can achieve together.

“Friday is a good one for everyone involved – but, right now, they are all good ones.

“The club is galvanised at the moment, and everyone is enjoying their football.”
