You’re having a go at Jack? You cannot be serious...

- Panic on the streets of Paisley.

No, not caused by the ‘Beast from the East’… who knew that was what Csaba Laszlo called himself these days… but some were downright feart by St Mirren’s non-descript win over Brechin last weekend.

Some calls from the crowd, a distinct minority it has to be said, were downright silly. With one in particular: “start taking this seriously, Jack” – ironically not to be taken seriously.

For anyone to point the finger at this management team and claim that they aren’t preparing for any game in the right manner is downright preposterous. And if that thought ever crossed your mind then it’s just a bit daft. It wasn’t pretty last weekend, I would be the first to admit that as did a handful of players in the aftermath, but St Mirren remain eight points clear at the top – with just a remarkable one defeat in 11.

If it wasn’t for a surge up the league by Livingston, who share the same record as Saints over their past eight games, then the Championship would no doubt be sewn up.

But no one could have predicted the job that David Hopkin has done at Livingston over the course of the past 18 months.

Since taking the reins from Mark Burchill, the former Scotland international has turned the West Lothian club around. The Lions have rediscovered their courage.

They still have it all to do but recent wins over Saints, Dundee United and now Morton ensure that they are now being considered as having a genuine chance of title outsiders.

But Hopkin maintains he is just happy to have avoided relegation.

It just so happens that Ryan Hardie appears to have been the catalyst for their recent revival, although it has to be said that they were already on some run of form.

Hardie is a strange one. It seems to have worked for him everywhere but St Mirren.

He was tarred with the same brush as your Kyle Huttons and Tom Walshs of this world, rightly or wrongly, but he never turned up with the goods when it mattered most for Saints – that much is true.

And I don’t think there were any tears when he was cast aside anyway.

As the clouds rolled in and the heavens opened to totally wipe out Wednesday night’s SPFL fixtures, it came as little surprise that the SPFL took the correct decision to call off tonight’s trip to Tannadice yesterday morning.

Not even the fluorescent beam off of Jim Spence’s napper could have melted the amount of snow that still resides on the Tannadice turf.

As the season nears its final quarter, the end is almost in sight for the Buddies.

But that doesn’t mean that this Championship title-race is over yet. The last thing Saints need now is for fixtures to start piling up.

It’s snow joke that United are on a poor run, but they aren’t out of the woods just yet.

The Tayside club still possess enough quality to embark on a 13- match unbeaten run between now and the end of the campaign. There’s plenty points up for grabs that’s for sure.

The chase is well and truly on to catch the Buddies and with three games in hand, Csaba Laszlo’s side will remain a threat.
