Snow chance

Buddies trip to Tayside rightly called off

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren’s clash away to Dundee United is the latest match to fall victim to the Beast from the East.

The two Championship sides had been set to take on one another on Tayside tonight but the wintry weather has put paid to any chance of the game going ahead.

The game has been called off on police advice, with the conditions around the ground deemed too dangerous for supporters.

The snow that has gripped the country all week had laid siege to the Buddies preparations throughout the week, with the side unable to train on Wednesday.

But the cancellation comes as no shock to supporters of either Saints or United, with both Paisley and Tayside hit heavily by the weather.

United’s clash with Queen of the South on Tuesday brought a sign of things to come, with the game postponed less than two hours before kick-off.

The cancellation is just the latest blow for Csaba Laszlo’s side, who remain 17 points adrift of league-leading Saints.

They may still have three games in hand over the Buddies but face an uphill battle, as they now face five midweek clashes in the space of eight weeks.

A Dundee United statement read: “After prolonged snowfall and following a safety inspection in and around Tannadice this morning, the fixture at home to St Mirren has been postponed.

“A new date for this game will be announced in due course.”

A St Mirren spokesman added: “We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused, and will update you with a new date when it has been rearranged.”

St Mirren have also been affected by the weather, with the stadium closed yesterday for the second day in a row.

The ticket office and St Mirren Dome have also been shut to the public.

Saints are now scheduled to be back in action next Saturday, when they will face fifth-placed Dunfermline at the Paisley 2021 Stadium.
