So long snow, hello to rain

-

We have just waved goodbye to The Beast From The East snow and Storm Emma – now rain is forecast in the Paisley area today.

There will be no repeat of yesterday’s prolonged snow showers in the town, and it will be bright with a few sunny breaks possible, according to the Met Office.

There will be mainly light winds and it will feel milder, with temperatures peaking at 6C.

There will also be bright spells and showers tomorrow and Friday.

Yesterday, a joint statement was issued by the Scottish Government and the STUC on the impact of the recent cold snap. The effect on businesses and workers was discussed at First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s six-monthly meeting with the STUC.

The statement, from Ms Sturgeon and Grahame Smith, STUC general secretary, said:“We are grateful to the people of Scotland who have coped tremendously well with the red weather warning and who heeded the advice not to travel.

“However, the Scottish Government and the STUC share a real concern that some workers were placed at unnecessary risk through being compelled to travel to work or placed under threat of lost pay if they did not make it into work.

“We are committed to doing everything within our current powers to encourage employers to be fair and flexible. That is why we have agreed to collaboratively develop a Fair Work charter focusing on the treatment of workers affected by severe weather or other emergencies.”

Renfrewshire North and West MSP Derek Mackay added:“The weather we had last week was out of everyone’s control.

“I welcome the charter, and any protection to workers that we can provide in these types of extreme circumstances.”
