Doubles success in Russia

- Craig Ritchie

Connor Thomson has returned from Russia with glory following a successful weekend at the Grade Three Almetyevsk Cup.

The Erskine tennis prospect, 17, teamed up with Jacob Fearnley to clinch the title.

This was the second title in as many weeks for Fearnley after taking home the Grade One Yeltsin Cup boys’ singles title the week before.

The pair dominated the doubles draw with a number of convincing results.

In the first round they only dropped one game with a 6-0, 6-1 win, before easing through their quarter-final 6-2, 6-2.

In the semi- final they overcame the Russia pair of Egor Agafonov and Ivan Denisov 6-4, 6-2 to reach the final.

After a tight 7-5 win in the first set against Italian duo Gabriele Bosio and Filippo Speziali, they failed to drop a game in the second set to lift the title.

The pair also reached the semi-final, Fearnley, and final, Thomson, respectively in the singles competition.

The duo had a number of great results, most notably from Thomson who beat the second seed and World number 53, Valentin Royer from France.

He followed that win up with victory over the fifth seed Andrey Uvarov in consecutive rounds.

However, Italian player Speziali went on to beat Fearnley 4-6, 6-1, 1-6 in the semi-final and Thomson 1-6, 2-6 in the final.
