It’s not just about scoring Reilly refuses to stress over lack of goals

- Craig Ritchie

Gavin Reilly insists he isn’t letting his recent lack of goals weigh heavily on his mind.

The St Mirren striker has failed to find the back of the net in the league since the side’s 1-0 win over Inverness Caley Thistle back on January 6.

A consolation effort against Aberdeen a fortnight later was to prove his last goal in the black and white stripes.

As the Buddies ramp up preparations ahead of Saturday’s clash at home to Dunfermline, Reilly admits he would love to return to the scoresheet against his former side.

Reilly has been open about his much-maligned loan stint with The Pars last season, where he struck just once in 22 league outings.

However, the 24-year-old insists he is now purely focused on the future as he strives to recapture the sort of form that saw him become the first St Mirren player in over 20 years to hit 20 league goals in a season.

He said: “Every time you play you want to score, regardless of who it is against.

“I mean I’ve been keeping note that I haven’t been scoring, but at the end of the day it’s not all about that.

“You still have to put in a shift and work hard for the team, but it would be nice to get another goal on Saturday.

“You’ve just got to keep working away, and if the chances come they come.

“But if not, you’ve just got to keep making sure you’re doing enough to stay in the team.

“We’ve been doing well the last couple of weeks so, hopefully, we can just keep that going.”

Saturday’s meeting with Allan Johnston’s side will be the fourth and final fixture between the two clubs.

Dunfermline’s blistering start to the campaign saw them bring St Mirren crashing back down to earth back in September with a 3-0 win at East End Park.

However, Jack Ross’s side have edged out the two matches since, with 1-0 and 2-1 wins coming in Fife and Paisley.

Reilly admits it could prove to be another tight encounter between the pair come Saturday but says Saints are confident of a positive result.

It’s another game,” he said. “And at this stage of the season – we’re top of the league and eight points clear – it’s just about taking each game as it comes.

“I don’t think they’ve picked up many wins recently, but they are a good team at the end of the day and they have done well.

“We know it’s going to be hard, especially being at home. Teams tend to come and sit in, with the likes of the Brechin game last week.

“It’s another game we’re looking forward to, particularly because we’re at home, as our home record has been good this season. So hopefully, we can keep that up.”
