A conman is targeting pubs and social clubs across Renfrewshire.

Police have launched an investigation into multiple reports of the crook stealing cash after being allowed access to office areas.

Renfrew Bowling Club bosses took to social media to release images of a man police have said they are keen to talk to about the scams.

A number of bars and clubs have been targeted by the fraudster, including The Keystone pub in Johnstone, in recent months with hundreds of pounds going missing.

It is understood the man, who is described as being in his 60s or 70s, enters premises claiming to be from a nearby pub.

After gaining the trust of staff, he asks to speak to the manager or owner offering to lend items to them.

However, when he is left unattended in back offices he rummages around and steals cash and other items before making off.

Renfrew Bowling Club posted photographs online in a bid to track down the culprit.

Club bosses said in a Facebook post: “This conman must be caught. He has now hit four or five places in the Renfrewshire area.

“There’s no further information at this point as Police Scotland are investigating, but they are very confident they will catch him.

“Assist Police Scotland in a p p re h e n d i n g this scumbag.”

Police say they are investigating the incidents and have appealed to anyone who may recognise the man in the CCTV images to get in touch.

A spokeswoman said: “We are aware of a number of reports of thefts in licensed bars and social clubs and we would like to speak to the individual pictured in connection to these incidents.

“If anyone recognises him then I would ask that they come forward and let us know his identity as he may be able to assist with our enquiries.”

If you have any information, you should contact police on 101.
