Paisley has the purple effect
The sky over Paisley turned purple in support of women’s rights and gender equality.
Paisley Town Hall was lit up in violet hues to mark International Women’s Day.
Celebrated on March 8 every year, International Women’s Day commemorates the movement for women’s rights.
As its signature colour is purple, the town’s iconic landmark glowed purple – something Renfrewshire’s Lord Provost Lorraine Cameron is very proud of.
Provost Cameron told the Express: “We were delighted to light up Paisley Town Hall in purple to support International Women’s Day.
“It ’ s a fantastic day to highlight the strong, confident women we have in Renfrewshire and an opportunity to encourage our communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.”
The first Women’s Day was held on February 28, 1909 in New York.
The 1910 International Women’s Conference, however, suggested March 8 became an “International Women’s Day.”
Locals could see the colourful display from miles around when the lights were switched on at 6pm on Thursday.
Provost Cameron added: “We need women everywhere to support each other, lift each other up and provide the younger generation with the platform to succeed in the future. So let’s continue to work hard, stay positive and continue to press for progress.”
